Tests of Gravity Using Lunar Laser Ranging

چکیده

Lunar laser ranging (LLR) has been a workhorse for testing general relativity over the past four decades. The three retroreflector arrays put on the Moon by the Apollo astronauts and the French built arrays on the Soviet Lunokhod rovers continue to be useful targets, and have provided the most stringent tests of the Strong Equivalence Principle and the time variation of Newton's gravitational constant. The relatively new ranging system at the Apache Point 3.5 meter telescope now routinely makes millimeter level range measurements. Incredibly, it has taken 40 years for ground station technology to advance to the point where characteristics of the lunar retroreflectors are limiting the precision of the range measurements. In this article, we review the gravitational science and technology of lunar laser ranging and discuss prospects for the future.

Constraint on intermediate-range gravity from earth-satellite and lunar orbiter measurements, and lunar laser ranging

In the experimental tests of gravity, there have been considerable interests in the possibility of intermediate-range gravity. In this paper, we use the earth-satellite measurement of earth gravity, the lunar orbiter measurement of lunar gravity, and lunar laser ranging measurement to constrain the intermediate-range gravity from λ = 1.2×10m−3.8×10m. The limits for this range are α = 10−5×10, w...

Lunar Ranging, Gravitomagnetism, and APOLLO

The technique of lunar laser ranging (LLR) has for many decades contributed to cutting-edge tests of the fundamental nature of gravity. These include the best tests to date of the strong equivalence principle, the time-rate-of-change of the gravitational constant, gravitomagnetism, the inverse square law, and preferred frame effects. The phenomenologies of each are briefly discussed, followed b...

Lunar Laser Ranging - A Comprehensive Probe of Post-Newtonian Gravity

Using more than 30 years of lunar laser ranging (LLR) data, the lunar orbit has been modeled and fit with several millimeters precision. This fit provides comprehensive confirmation of the general relativistic equations of motion for solar system dynamics, achieving several key tests of Einstein’s tensor theory of gravity, and strongly constraining presence of any additional long range interact...

Testing Lorentz Symmetry with Gravity

In this talk, results from the gravitational sector of the Standard-Model Extension (SME) are discussed. The weak-field phenomenology of the resulting modified gravitational field equations is explored. The application of the results to a variety of modern gravity experiments, including lunar laser ranging, Gravity Probe B, binary pulsars, and Earth-laboratory tests, shows promising sensitivity...

Space-based Tests of Gravity with Laser Ranging

Existing capabilities in laser ranging, optical interferometry and metrology, in combination with precision frequency standards, atom-based quantum sensors, and drag-free technologies, are critical for the space-based tests of fundamental physics; as a result, of the recent progress in these disciplines, the entire area is poised for major advances. Thus, accurate ranging to the Moon and Mars w...
